World’s largest airport taking shape in Dubai South

Duabi’s Al Maktoum International Airport is on its way to become the world’s largest airport, with the commencement of the construction of the new passenger terminal at a cost of AED 128 billion. The project is part of Dubai Aviation Corporation’s strategy aimed at enhancing the capacity of the airport.

260 million passengers, 400 gates

Once completed, Al Maktoum Airport—located in Dubai South, will be able to handle the world’s largest capacity of up to 260 million passengers annually. Designed to be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport, Al Maktoum Airport will accommodate 400 gates and eventually manage all the operations at Dubai International Airport. Featuring five parallel runways, the airport will be the first to employ the most advanced technologies in the aviation sector.

Residential and commercial developments

An entire city is being built around the new airport, complete with residential communities with world-class amenities. Major developers like Emaar have launched projects featuring villas, townhouses and apartments to meet the demand for housing for an estimated million people who will be moving to the city for work and business. The city will also host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.

Dubai: world’s new global centre

The new city of Dubai South will spread across a 145-square-kilometer (56-square-mile) stretch of desert, and will have eight neighbourhoods designed for commercial and residential purposes. The upgraded Al Maktoum Airport and the city of Dubai South will be a key driver of Dubai’s growth strategy to elevate it to be the world’s new global centre.
